Librarianship
I was a professional librarian from 1994-2021. Most of my career was spent at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). At UCSB Library my major responsibilities included reference, instruction and the selection of materials for Feminist-LGBTQ studies, and U.S. history. I also coordinated the Humanities Collection Group; and the library’s Scholarly Communication Program, which focuses on the economics of scholarly publishing, open access publishing, raising awareness about the changes that are occurring in scholarly publishing, and helping students and faculty manage their intellectual property.
I got involved in indexing in preparation for retirement. I enjoyed indexing so much that it was something I was willing to do before I retired in my spare time, mostly evenings and weekends and on my commute to and from campus, hence “Moonlight Indexing.” The joy of indexing complements my academic work and vice versa.
Since retiring in 2021, I have been enjoying indexing even more, and splitting my time between our homes in Ventura and Detroit. We bought the Detroit house in 2013. We’ve been renovating it slowly over the years, in preparation for retirement. We love Detroit’s history, architecture, arts scene, gardens, and people.
Lifestyle
In my free time I enjoy gardening and gardens; reading the New Yorker, memoirs and fiction; visiting flea markets, galleries and museums; watching Masterpiece programs; photography; traveling; and reading on the deck with Geoffrey. I love old and handmade objects, but don’t need to own everything I love.
Background
I was born in San Francisco, raised in San Jose, and have lived in Austin, TX; Santa Cruz, CA; Luanda, Angola; and Brooklyn, NY; before settling, much to my surprise, in Ventura, CA.
